Mimes throughout the Ages

 

Mimes have always fascinated almost every people who are interested in theater or entertainment. Mimes have always been there back in the ages. But what are mimes? Mimes are means by which self-expression is projected through the movement of the body without speaking even a single word. Back in the primitive age, mimes are used to communicate with the primitive people. When people learned to speak to express their selves, then mimes were used to entertain people.

Mimes become a form to entertain people begun back from the ancient Greece. It all begun in the Theater of Dionysus. Actors were masked in order to portray more the facial expressions of the characters in order that every person who was in the audience can see the whole story being enacted.

When the Romans took over Greece, they brought along the art of mime to Italy in order to make their own version of the Greek’s mimes. The Roman’s version of mimes evolved from pantomime up to the mock-naval battles. Mimes had proven prestige under the rule of Emperor Augustus of Rome.

When the Roman Empire fall so as the Roman’s mimes, the Christian Church emerged to be powerful and wanted to stop the performance of mimes. With all the threats that mimes performers had, the basic form of mimes remain to exist and survive over the years.

Mimes continued to evolve over the years and it even reached the Middle Ages as well as the sixteenth century in Italy. Thus, Commedia dell’ Arte had emerged. It is Italy’s version of mimes.

Mimes had traveled a long time to reached this far. It has survived the First World War to Second World War. Mimes continued to evolve and had been the form of entertainment to people out of this tragic event, experiencing war. Mimes have always been there throughout those dark years to put smiles to those weary faces of the people.

As of the moment there are only two types of mimes: first, literal mimes used for story and comedy theater; and second, abstract mimes used to express feelings, images and as well as thoughts out of a serious issue.

Mimes become part of entertainment. There are some mimes’ show for corporate affairs, theaters and other special events. The amazement that this type of entertainment can bring to different type of audiences has brought thousands and thousand of people to sit back and relax to watch a mime show. We often see the performers wear a black shirt and pants while their faces are painted with white with the paint on their eyes and mouth are fully exaggerated to project the kind of expression they are portraying.
